Special Instructions for SideSwipe Use
- Reduce speed for extremely stiff or dense mixtures. SideSwipe works well for most recipes you make, including medium-heavy doughs like sugar and chocolate chip cookies and even heavy doughs like peanut butter buckeyes. See our FAQ section for more details on how to know if your mixture is too thick or your batch is too big.
- Do not use for recipes using frozen ingredients, chilled/frozen butter, or chilled/frozen peanut butter. SideSwipe works well with room temperature shortening, butter and peanut butter.
- Speed modifications are recommended. SideSwipe achieves good results at speeds lower than you use with the metal beater. Reduce mixer speeds during and after the point you add flour or other thickening ingredients. SideSwipe will mix well, you’ll reduce the flour “cloud” and batter splatter, and you won’t overmix your recipe. It’s fine to use higher speeds for creaming and to introduce air into light batters.
- Do not use for making bread dough. Use your dough hook.
- Recipe modifications may be necessary. SideSwipe mixes recipes faster and more thoroughly. You may want to reduce mixing time by one-third to one-half of the suggested time for your recipes
Care and Routine Maintenance
- Wash your SideSwipe before using.
- SideSwipe is hand washable or top-rack dishwasher safe. Wash away from knives and sharp objects.
- Use your fingers or a spatula to clean batter and dough from the fins and frame. DO NOT use a knife or sharp object.
- Do not stick your fingers or a utensil into the bowl while the mixer is operating. Damage to you, your mixer blade, or your mixer can occur.
- Some wear and tear can be expected with any silicone product. Inspect your SideSwipe for damage immediately after each use. Discontinue use if fins begin to crack or tear.
- Check to make sure the attachment hub cover is secure before you mix. This little metal cover at the front of your mixer can loosen over time and fall into your bowl. This can cause damage to the mixer blade if it becomes lodged between the blade and the bowl.
- Check SideSwipe’s fit often for tilt-head mixers. With heavy use, your mixer’s head can drop lower in the bowl and cause bouncing. Readjust mixer if needed using the installation and adjustment instructions.

- Unplug mixer.
- Secure mixing bowl.
- Attach SideSwipe.
- If blade does not make contact with the bowl, lower the mixing bowl and adjust the height of the beater by turning the adjustment screw on the inside of the back column of the mixer. (see photo).
- To increase contact, turn the inset screw counter-clockwise 1/8 turn at a time until the appropriate height is reached. (See photo).
- If the bottom fin is crushed into the bowl, decrease contact with the bowl: turn the screw clockwise 1/8 turn at a time until the desired height is reached.
Troubleshooting - bowl-lift
The stand mixer wobbles as the mixer is mixing.
Make sure your bowl is properly seated on the hanging arms and pins and is snapped into place. Some wobbling or vibration is normal and will not affect the performance of your mixer.
There is a stripe of ingredients at the top of the bowl.
A narrow stripe of ingredients just above the top path of the blade can occur when making large batches of thick dough. As the mixer begins to churn some heavy batters, it heaves the ingredients above the beater path and may leave some batter on the bowl. If this occurs, stop your mixer and scrape the stripe down lightly into the bowl just past the top fin. Restart your mixer to incorporate.
The mixer kicks flour & light ingredients out as it mixes.
The flour cloud can be minimized by adding lightweight ingredients slowly, a little at a time. Add
only on your mixer’s lowest speed, or stop the mixer to add ingredients a bit at a time.
The batter splatters into my kitchen.
SideSwipe’s fins make contact with the bowl and move ingredients around more than your standard beater. To reduce splatter when you are making a thin batter, reduce your mixer speed.
