Why, you ask, would I make my own sprinkles? Well, why not?
  1. They can be made using ingredients you know - no mystery ingredients
  2. They can be made the exact colors you want
  3. It's fun!!

This recipe, from Sugar Spun Run, is vegan and so simple to make. You can use piping bags with tips, as we did, or you can have your kids make them using squeeze bottles.

ingredients & equipment

  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar divided
  • 1 Tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp water not hot water
  • 1 Tbsp light corn syrup
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (or any flavor you like)
  • Gel food coloring
  • Wax paper
  • Pastry bags and small tips (Like Wilton #2 and #4) or small food-grade squeeze bottles with narrow tips
  • Small bowls for coloring the glaze

instructions

  • In your stand mixer, fitted with SideSwipe, or a medium-sized bowl, mix together 1 cup powdered sugar, cornstarch, water, corn syrup and vanilla extract until well-combined.
  • Stir in the remaining 1/2 cup powdered sugar at low speed

  • Divide into smaller bowls, one for each color sprinkles desired.
  • Add food coloring and stir until well-combined and desired color is reached (remember, the more coloring you add the more you will be able to taste it in the final product).

  • Transfer mixture into a piping bag fitted with a #2 and/or #4 Wilton tip. You can also use squeeze bottles with a small hole at the top.

  • Line two cookie sheets with wax or parchment paper and, using your piping bag, draw long, sprinkle-width horizontal lines across the paper. If desired, also make small dots (about the size of a pencil eraser) along the sides of the wax paper for some variety in shape.
  • Allow to set undisturbed for at least 12 hours to dry.
  • Once dried, peel off any dots or shapes you have made and then use a knife to cut down your horizontal lines to make sprinkles. You are now ready to decorate your baked goods, ice cream or whipped toppings!
  • The sprinkles keep well in an airtight container, but the colors will wash out over time. We suggest using within a month at most.
