mummy cupcakes

These cupcakes are easy for even the smallest children to make. We used boxed cake mix to make the cupcakes---we dyed yellow cake with orange food coloring (mix of yellow and red will work). You could save this step and use a chocolate mix, which would be equally cute. You can make your own frosting, or save time and use canned. We won't tell!

You need:
  • Cake mix plus ingredients listed on the box (usually eggs, oil, water or some combination)
  • Cupcake liners
  • Cupcake tin
  • Candy googly eyes
  • Buttercream frosting - enough for 12 cupcakes
  • Squeeze bottle with any flat decorating tip** or pastry bag with flat tip

Instructions:
  1. Mix and bake cupcakes according to normal directions. Add food coloring if desired (before dividing batter into cups)
  2. Make or open white colored frosting
  3. Put into pastry bag with flat tip or squeeze bottle with flat tip.
  4. Squeeze frosting out making horizontal lines across the cupcake. Leave some of the cupcake showing between a few of the lines.
  5. Add two eyes
  6. That's it!!

monster cupcakes

Our little monster cupcakes to are best for older children, but can be easily modified for small kids, too. Use any cake and frosting recipe, or buy prepared frosting and a box mix at the store. They'll be adorable either way.

You need:
  • Cake mix plus ingredients listed on the box (usually eggs, oil, water or some combination)
  • Cupcake liners
  • Cupcake tin
  • Candy googly eyes
  • Buttercream frosting - enough for 24 cupcakes
  • Gel food color
  • Squeeze bottle with any star decorating tip** or pastry bag with star tip

Instructions:
  1. Mix and bake cupcakes according to normal directions.
  2. Make or open white colored frosting and use color to achieve desired  shade. A bold color like this one uses quite a bit of food coloring, so expect to go through a full little container of gel color for a 24-cupcake batch.
  3. Put into pastry bag with star tip or squeeze bottle with star tip.
  4. Starting at the outer edge, squeeze frosting outward, and nudge back to finish each little "fur mound." You may want to practice the piping first to master the technique. Alternatively, you can just squiggle through the tip or use a knife to cover the cupcake with frosting. You know your kids' skill level. Don't forget you want this to be fun :)
  5. Add several eyes.
  6. Admire your hard work.
