Will SideSwipe work on my mixer?
Each version of the SideSwipe Spatula Mixer Blade is designed to fit the unique dimensions of specific models of single-beater stand mixers. It will only work on the models listed. If your mixer is not listed, you cannot use our product at this time. Please see the chart on Models/ SideSwipe Solution page for specifics.
My mixer is similar to a KitchenAid. Are you sure I can’t use a SideSwipe?
Sorry, but no. You can’t “make SideSwipe work” on other mixer models, even if they appear to be similar.
Do you plan to develop a SideSwipe for hand mixers or double-beater stand mixers?
No. The spatula mixer blade concept cannot be adapted to work on hand mixers or stand mixers with double beaters, such as those offered by Sunbeam and General Electric.
When are your new models coming out?
SideSwipes for the full KitchenAid® line will be available for the holiday season. Please check for specific availability and shipping dates at The SideSwipe Store. You can visit our store by clicking on the Buy Here link in the green bar.
What kinds of recipes can I use the SideSwipe for?
SideSwipe can replace your flat metal beater for all but the very densest recipes. It works well for mashed potatoes and baked goods, including cookies, brownies, quick breads, cakes, and frostings. SideSwipe performs especially well on recipes that use thick, sticky ingredients like peanut butter or cream cheese. SideSwipe offers superior creaming and delivers loftier cakes and frostings. Please note that SideSwipe works faster than your metal beater, so you may need to adjust your mixing time.
Are some recipes too thick for SideSwipe?
Yes, a very few. We all have recipes that cause the mixer to moan, groan, and nearly grind to a halt. You should not use your SideSwipe for these recipes – use your metal beater instead. If your mixer struggles through a new, very thick or dense recipe, please stop using SideSwipe and replace with the flat metal beater that came with your mixer.
What else shouldn’t I use SideSwipe for?
SideSwipe is not appropriate for recipes that use frozen or hard-chilled ingredients, especially high-fat ingredients like butter or peanut butter. SideSwipe will not perform well and damage to the beater or mixer could result. Butter, peanut butter, cream cheese and shortenings should be room temperature/softened for best results.
Will I need to adjust my mixing time with SideSwipe?
Yes. You will find that SideSwipe mixes your batters quite a bit faster, so you may need to adjust your mixing time to prevent overmixing. We recommend that you check for the desired consistency about halfway through the recipe’s stated mixing time. Continue to monitor the progress until you get the result you want. This is most critical after adding flour, when overbeating can cause a tough end result in some recipes. You’ll get a feel for how much faster SideSwipe works after you use it a few times.
Should I change the speeds I use with SideSwipe?
Yes. Not only is SideSwipe faster, but it works more efficiently at slower speeds than your metal beater. We recommend that you reduce your speed by about two levels for each mixing activity. This is especially important when adding lightweight dry ingredients. The bowl contact can cause ingredients to form a “cloud” over the bowl. Add ingredients slowly a bit at a time on STIR or your mixer’s slowest speed. It is fine to cream butter/shortening at higher speeds, but, again, you may find that lower speeds work just as well and reduces splattering.
Will I need to adjust my mixer for SideSwipe?
We recommend that everyone who buys SideSwipe KTH-1 for KitchenAid’s tilt-head models raise the beater position on their mixer before using SideSwipe. Instructions are included with the product and will be featured on this website soon. This step is especially important for older mixers; those with a lot of “miles” on them; for people whose beaters are adjusted so they scrape the bottom of the bowl; and those whose original beaters have worn or peeling paint. This simple adjustment will help you achieve a better fit and can reduce the wobbling/vibration some users experience with SideSwipe. We base our adjustment instructions on KitchenAid guidelines. The adjustment will not affect the performance of most other mixer attachments.
Can I put SideSwipe in the dishwasher?
Yes, SideSwipe can be washed safely on the top rack of your dishwasher (we recommend a low-heat setting). Please wash away from knives and other sharp objects, as they can damage your mixer blade.
Can SideSwipe damage my mixer?
No. SideSwipe connects to your stand mixer the same way as your original blade, and the motor needs to work only a little bit harder because of increased friction on the bowl. In our tests with various batters, SideSwipe increased the work of the motor between 10 and 20 percent. The strain is three to four times less than when you make bread dough using the hook, and is far below the manufacturer’s total wattage rating.
